Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid : Match report | The Sun |Sport|Football

Sir Alex Ferguson was here to spy on Madrid ahead of their trip to Manchester United next week. Ronaldo's supershow has sent a shiver down Fergie's spine.

This triumph relieved the pressure on boss Jose Mourinho. It also plunged Barcelona into a full-blown crisis on a night of high drama at this vast venue.

Regardless of the result in Saturday's Clasico in La Liga at the Bernabeu, Madrid will come to Old Trafford next Tuesday buzzing and full of belief.

Madrid came here chasing the result after drawing 1-1 at the Bernabeu in the first leg – just like they have to do against United.

This was probably Mourinho's biggest win since he took charge at the Bernabeu three years ago given his team's woeful season in La Liga where Barcelona have stormed 16 points clear of Madrid.

But this emphatic triumph proved they are far from finished and United's task to get through next week will be a gigantic one.

That opener sapped Barca's confidence. They did not enjoy the occasion because they were not in control. For all they tried they could not actually find a consistent rhythm.

The tie was decided 11 minutes into the restart as Ronaldo tapped home the second leaving Barca needing three goals to go through.

Varane's 68th-minute header left the Nou Camp numb and Mourinho hugged the youngster and danced on the touchline in wild celebration.

Alba grabbed a late consolation for Barcelona but frankly the Catalans will take a long time to recover from this shock.

When his team needed it most Mourinho's men delivered. Whether it proves a turning point in his Bernabeu tenure it remains to be seen.

The piece of silverware they really want is their 10th Champions League. Boosted by this performance Ronaldo & Co will certainly be hard to stop for United.

Who would bet against the Special One running down the touchline towards the corner flag in celebration at Old Trafford AGAIN next week?

Barcelona: Pinto, Alves, Puyol, Pique, Alba, Xavi (Thiago 77), Busquets, Fabregas (Villa 59), Pedro (Tello 71), Messi, Iniesta

Real Madrid: Lopez, Arbeloa, Varane, Ramos, Coentrao, Khedira, Alonso (Essien 83), Di Maria, Ozil (Pepe 73), Ronaldo, Higuain (Callejon 69)

West Ham United 2 Tottenham Hotspur 3 - Telegraph.co.uk

He has been developing over recent seasons, but appears to have actually started on under Andre Villas-Boas. His physique have been also strengthened by him, exuding even greater presence. Opponents, undoubtedly in recently weeks, look worried when Bale gathers person. No question. They can hurt them in therefore many ways. He can score from free-kicks. Havoc can be wreaked by his corners. If defenders back away in open play, the target can be found by Bale from range. Stick tight and he can rotate away from them, melting with that strong speed in to place. West Ham made the especially foolish error of failing woefully to show Bale to his weaker right foot and settled. Having ascended to next in the Premier League with this specific derby success, Spurs have another capital duel on Sunday, against Arsenal. ArsAne Wenger will have to prepare his group well. Bale could go through the middle against Per Mertesacker, not the most equal of dash contests, or out wide against Carl Jenkinson if Bacary Sagna is not healthy. The idea occurred of what sort of defensive master like Moore would have coped with this type of zephyr as Bale. He would have bided his time, as he did with Jairzinho in Guadalajara, before intercepting. What really requires relating is how West Ham as a club did Mooreas storage happy yesterday evening. The people used specific t-shirts that will be auctioned to boost money for the Bobby Moore Fund for cancer research. There were choices away from surface. The team made a commemorative program loaded with tributes to Moore. His girl Roberta was presented to the crowd before kick-off. The teams were led by his grandchildren, Poppy, Freddie and Ava, out inside their Moore Noa6 shirts, sitting on the frequency as Upton Park shook with a powerful minuteas applause from all existing for the much-missed Moore. West Ham and Spurs fans stood together to salute Moore. Yet, after every one of the pre-match respect, common Derby rivalries resurfaced. Just as the West Ham supporters were chanting caustically about Bale, the Welshman obtained. West Ham skilled Bale the opportunity, you start with poor distribution from Guy Demel. David Collins slipped down and Baleas left foot did the others. Spurs seemed in control and their supporters took to taunting Carroll. The baiters were quickly bit as Carroll equalised. The penalty was won by the England striker, watched by Roy Hodgson, when Scott Parker foolishly jumped in and grabbed Carrollas left foot. Howard Webb had a great look at the trash before going correctly, and rather significantly, to the spot. Carrollas punishment was unstoppable. Then came the Jaaskelainen show, beginning by stretching out a hand to drive away Steven Caulkeras header at a Bale spot. He continued after the break, denying Caulker again. Jaaskelainen was lucky that after a post was hit by Sigurdsson, the ball bounced out and fell to Adebayor, who is as cool as Bale is warm currently. Adebayor had the flexibility of the West Ham region. He had to score. He had all of the target to aim at. Adebayor went right at Jaaskelainen. Villas-Boas hit the air in anger. His mood shortly worsened when West Ham took the lead after 58 minutes. Coleas composure and accuracy were as good as Adebayoras were poor. He collected Joey OaBrienas cross and beat the Spurs offside lure. Cole handled the ball and slightly grazed it but it'd enough energy and direction to elude Hugo Lloris. The Jaaskelainen show resumed. He clawed absent yet another Caulker header and then tipped over a Bale piledriver. Down the other end Lloris was out smartly to stop from Matty Taylor, a big save in the situation of the match. Spurs quickly equalised, still another Bale shipping creating disorder, the ball bouncing round the West Ham area, before it was forced by Sigurdsson home. Jaaskelainen saved from Bale and Adebayor and an excellent place appeared within West Hamas reach. However came Bale again. Lightning struck twice.

Slide plans for St James' Park, Newcastle - The Northern Echo

TOON fans may hope their fortunes aren't on the slide - unlike they might be if unusual 'transport' proposals get the go ahead.

For two "travel accelerators" could be installed outside St James' Park, Newcastle, to help propel supporters away from the ground that bit quicker.

The slides, the first of their kind in the UK, will allow some of the 53,000 matchgoers to avoid having to tackle a long flight of steps and instead 'chute' down to the stadium's car park or Metro station below.

The business improvement district company NE1 Ltd, which has submitted plans to Newcastle City Council, said similar slides are used by commuters  at the railway station in Utrecht, Holland.

The slides are the latest idea in NE1's award-winning pocket park programme, designed to infuse new life into areas of Newcastle city centre.

The company said it has worked closely with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and with police crime prevention design specialists Consultancy to ensure it is safe.

Adrian Waddell, NE1's director of operations said: "The slides are intended to inject some fun into the city centre and take their inspiration from Holland where slides have been installed in a busy railway station to speed up access to train platforms and to inject new life into an area.

Mark Jensen, editor of Newcastle United fanzine The Mag said: "I think most people's first reaction will be to think 'how bizarre'.

"I'm sure some people will be wondering if the money could be better spent, but I am all for innovative things in Newcastle. I imagine the cost will be nominal.

The slides have been designed by Newcastle-based Robinson Landscape Design. Tom Robinson said "Being playful and soing something a little unusual aims to encourage people to spend more time here enjoying the city.

Fulham 1 - Stoke 0: Martin Jol hails his Dimi-star - Express.co.uk

Berbatov received a standing ovation when tried for a performance that has been up with the most effective The game had been drifting far from Martin Jolas area and Stoke could easily have snatched victory. West Brom 2-1 Sunderland: Unstoppable Lukaku gives Baggies first win of 2013 - Goal.com America

In a very scrappy game both sides created a number of opportunities but neither goalkeeper was much called upon to make a save from an on target shot. The opening goal of the game came in the first half from the impressive Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian converting a penalty after Craig Gardner had handled a Liam Ridgewell cross. The striker added a second in the second half as he chased down a poor Titus Bramble back pass and Simon Mignolet's clearance struck him and rebounded into the net. The visitors did get a goal back with 11 minutes to play through Stephane Sessegnon but it was too little too late for the Black Cats.

The main talking point before kick off was the inclusion of Peter Odemwingie, who had been left out of the Albion squad since his transfer deadline day antics. Steve Clarke made one other change to his matchday squad that beat Liverpool, top scorer Lukaku returning to the side in place of Graham Dorrans. Injuries to Lee Cattermole and Danny Rose forced Martin O'Neill into two changes with Danny Graham given his first start for Sunderland since moving from Swansea and Seb Larsson returning to the midfield.

A very slow start to the game did not help lift the temperatures inside the Hawthorns but the game sprang into life in the 24th minute and chances began to appear at both ends of the game but somehow the deadlock was not broken. The post denied Steven Fletcher minutes after Lukaku's miss, the striker was found by Graham and his measured low shot beat Ben Foster but struck the post and 24 – Graham to Fletcher, measured effort beat Foster but struck the post and bounced away, rebound came back to the striker but he volleyed over the crossbar.

Luckily for West Brom, its wastefulness in front of goal did not last long as Lukaku opened the scoring in the 34th minute from the penalty spot. Gardner, playing as a makeshift right back, handled a Ridgewell cross inside the area to gift the home side an opportunity to take the lead. Lukaku picked the ball up, placed it on the spot and blasted it past Mignolet for his 11th goal of the season.

The second half started slowly although there were potential openings neither side were able to test the opposition goalkeeper until the 75th minute. That was when Lukaku created and scored his second goal of the game. The striker stole the ball from John O'Shea on the halfway line and latched onto a weak Bramble back pass, Mignolet came out to clear the ball straight at the striker and the ball flew into the net

With 11 minutes to go, Sunderland grabbed itself a lifeline through an inch perfect Sessgnon strike from 12 yards. James McClean created space for himself inside the penalty area and fired a cross into six yard box; the ball struck Jonas Olsson and dropped to Sessegnon who curled the ball into the top corner.

West Bromwich Albion 2 Sunderland 1: match report - Telegraph.co.uk

He said: "I can't comment on what the supporters are going to do. He was always going to come back into the squad at some stage. We have to move on.

"Lukaku is in a really rich vein of form. We are delighted he chose to come here and it's been good for us and good for Rom. I'm just pleased to win and it's a relief after the run we have had."

The 4-2 win at Sunderland in November lifted Clarke's team into third place but they have had a difficult time since, with the 1-0 win at Liverpool last Monday their first victory of 2013.

Sunderland were unlucky when Ben Foster fumbled John O'Shea's header onto the post before Steven Fletcher's low shot came back off the upright. But they fell behind on 35 minutes after Craig Gardner was adjudged to have handled Liam Ridgewell's cross in the penalty area. Lukaku stepped up to score from the spot.

Sunderland improved in the second period, but Lukaku claimed his second 15 minutes from time after goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's clearance from Titus Bramble's poor back pass cannoned off the Belgian to rebound into the empty net.

The visitors responded and Stéphane Sessègnon found the corner after Jonas Olsson failed to clear. They could even have claimed a point but Foster was equal to David Vaughan's effort.

The fear of relegation is still there for Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill. He said: "I really felt we could and should have got something out of the game."

Dortmund held 1-1 at Gladbach in Bundesliga - Football news

BERLIN (AP) — Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen conceded more ground in the Bundesliga title race after both were held to draws on Sunday.

Defending champion Dortmund was held 1-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach, while Leverkusen failed to take advantage in a 0-0 draw at bottom side Greuther Fuerth in the late game. Mario Goetze put Dortmund ahead from the penalty spot for his eighth goal of the season in the 31st minute. Amin Younes, who had Moenchengladbach's first effort on goal in the 56th, equalized with a deflected shot in the 67th.

"There are worse things than drawing in Gladbach," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. "Not that we're happy about it." Goetze earned the penalty when he was brought down by Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the area.

"It was my mistake," the goalkeeper said. "He put the ball past me and then accepted the present. I'll work on my positioning." Playing without club top scorers Juan Arango and Patrick Herrmann through injury and suspension, respectively, Moenchengladbach failed to have a shot on goal in the first half. But the 19-year-old Younes then netted his first Bundesliga goal to earn the point.

"I'll go home and celebrate with my family," Younes said. Both sides had chances to win it late on. Moenchengladbach substitute Peniel Mlapa hit the side-netting from a difficult angle in the last minute. Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl then missed with the goal at his mercy in injury time.

"We had the game in our grip, didn't allow any goal chances," Kehl said. "There's no way should have allowed this game end in a draw. In the end I could have decided it, that's bitter." Dortmund was left 17 points behind runaway leader Bayern Munich. The sides meet in an eagerly anticipated German Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday. Leverkusen remained one point behind Dortmund.

"We just didn't move well today," Dortmund forward Marco Reus said after his first return to Moenchengladbach since switching between the sides. "I don't know why. It was very untypical of us." Fuerth, which sacked Mike Bueskens as coach on Wednesday, had goalkeeper Wolfgang Hesl to thank for a string of saves in Ludwig Preis' first game in charge as interim coach.

"We're not giving up under any circumstances," Preis said. "That was an indication that we're still alive." Mergim Mavraj almost scored for Fuerth in the 30th, only for Gonzalo Castro to clear his header off the line.

Hesl denied Stefan Kiessling before break, and then again from the rebound, before Andre Schuerrle's follow-up effort was cleared off the line. The Fuerth goalkeeper was the busiest player in the second half, but the home side held on for a valuable point.

"We've declared ourselves back (in the relegation fight)," said Fuerth president Helmut Hack. "Most people had written us off already."

David Franco ponders his demand for Danica 500

What will James Franco say in the beginning of the Daytona 500? The Oscar-nominated actor is giving the command to owners to fire their machines, a work that is usually performed most abundant in popular words in racing: "Gentlemen, start your engines." Needless to say, this season is different. Danica Patrick could be the first person to start out from the pole in a Cup race, so Franco sounds like he is preparing a clear. We'll see if he complements the control that was used when Patrick ran in the Indianapolis 500, "Lady and gentlemen, start your engines." Obviously, you won't ever understand what Franco has up his sleeve. a Paul Newberry a' http://www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963 Com A HEARTY BUNCH: NASCAR FANS COME BACK TO DANGER ZONE: Say this about NASCAR fans: They cannot shock easily. One day following a painful accident injured dozens of fans in the stands, these same seats are filling up for the Daytona 500. Nobody seems too concerned. "These ought to be great seats," said Rick Barasso, as he settled into a spot that was right in the danger zone when Kyle Larson's car slammed into the capture fencing on the final lap of a Nationwide Series competition Saturday. "I mean, what're the probability of it happening again?" That is apparently the attitude of the supporters going into the Daytona 500, the season-opening Cup competition and greatest event on the NASCAR routine. Most people say it's worth the risk to sit next to the ear-rattling activity a' only 20 feet away for all those in the first row. Borussia MAnchengladbach versus. Borussia Dortmund: Preview and TELEVISION...

Borussia Dortmund happen to be Borussia Park on Sunday where Marco Reus will play in MAnchengladbach for the first time since making the move last summer. Marco Reus returns to handle his old team for the very first time since leaving last summer as Borussia Dortmund happen to be Borussia Park to simply take on Borussia MAnchengladbach on Sunday. In the installation back the end of September, BVB just demolished Gladbach to the tune of 5-0 facing significantly more than 80,000 at the Westfalenstadion. Injuries and insides can play their part to make Sunday's affair just a little less star-studded. Gladbach will be without midfielders Patrick Herrmann and Juan Arango, while BVB will miss forwards Robert Lewandowski and Julian Schieber. The four have combined for twenty-five goals and a dozen assists so far. BVB will also probably be missing Jakub Blaszczykowski, and nobody really likes to see Kuba miss a game title. Gladbach have just acquired once in 2013, and it will be a tough task to allow them to seize gain number two against BVB. Dare I say a Herculean effort? Probably anywhere near that. The fact that BVB will soon be putting Reus onto the pitch is bad enough new for almost any challenger. The 23 year old has done some definitely marvelous stuff on the subject for BVB thus far, and every week it's similar to that he will "wow" you rather than get stopped by the weight. Reus has fourteen targets to his name in every contests, and he won the last time to a hattrick he played. He had two objectives the final time these two sides confronted. The hosts require a strong first half to help keep everyone dedicated to "Can Gladbach get this match?" In place of "Can Gladbach reduce a blowout?" .. If their "Back 7" play well, then Gladbach stand a go here. It obviously starts in goal with Marc Andre ter Stegen. The goalkeeper has not been just like he was a year ago, and I do believe that could have a great deal to do with not having Dante before him this year. But, Gladbach will be needing an ideal match from him in purpose if they are to win this match. He will need help from his back four of Tony Jantschke, Alvaro Dominguez, Martin Stranzl, and Oscar Wendt. All of those people have to perform well for Gladbach to gain, but nothing may be as crucial as Thorben Marx and Havard Nordtveit in the center of the park. The 2 central midfielders will be essential to pressuring BVB's attack before they can get free runs at the Gladbach security and cause damage. Klopp posseses an interesting issue with this fit. Beginning tomorrow, BVB will perform five suits in fortnight. Sunday, they are absent to Borussia MAnchengladbah. Friday, they are absent to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal. Next Saturday, they host Hannover in the category. Per week from Tuesday, Shakhtar Donetsk happen to be Dortmund for the second leg of these Champions League link. Then, BVB can travel to the Veltins Arena for the next Revierderby of the summer season against Schalke. BVB doesn't have the deepest of squads, therefore Klopp's management on the next fourteen days will soon be hugely important. Out: Patrick Herrmann (stopped), Juan Arango (leg). Herrmann is suspended for the fit because of yellow card deposition, but his loss will not be felt up to one other player out. Juan Arango acquired an ankle knock against Lazio midweek in the Europa League and has not recovered enough to function this week-end. This can be a significant reduction for Gladbach. Arango has started each group match in 2010 at left midfield, and it will be difficult for Gladbach to replace his left foot out there and on set pieces. The likely replacement out wide is Finnish midfielder Alexander Ring. Out: Robert Lewandowski (suspended), Patrick Owomoyela (knee), Julian Schieber (suspended). Doubtful: Jakub Blaszczykowski (hip) With Lewandowski and Schieber missing out because of picking up silly red cards in recent weeks, your choice for JArgen Klopp can be an interesting one. One selection getting a lot of run would be to bring up Hungarian BAlint Bajner from the reserves and give him his first run out with the first team. He went with the initial team to Manhattan project Manga throughout the winter break and confirmed well, but there is another solution. Klopp could release Mario GAtze as a seven and see what they can do. If Blaszczykowski is pushed out because of his hip, it may drive Klopp's hand into mentioning Bajner when this occurs. Iker healing from injury dreams with getting championship this year

Iker Casillas says his recovery from the broken bone in his hand is going a lot better than expected and he could possibly be right back involving the Real Madrid posts when late March.

Casillas' hand was broken by a random kick from his team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa during Madrid's Copa del Rey quarter-final sport at the Mestalla on January 23.

It absolutely was feared he'd experience 3 months on the sidelines, and the team moved quickly to sign Diego Lopez for 3.5 million from Sevilla to play in their likely season-defining games against Barcelona in the Copa and Manchester United in the Champions League.

The Madrid club leader told reporters on Thursday evening, at the beginning of a new club store at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, that the initial schedule had only been a worst-case scenario.

"I am feeling quite positive," Casillas said. "The surgeon gave me the worst-case scenario, he said it could get 3 months. But last week when the splint was removed, I was told I'd one month left. Now I am doing effective exercises to obtain freedom and power back in the finger."

Casillas said he had been spending so much time at Madrid's Valdebebas training facility to obtain right back playing when possible.

"Until now I've not had much strength in it, but I am receiving it back little by little," he explained. "We have reached the halfway point of the damage. I have still got per month to go. I will have to work more and experience more to obtain right back the flexibility of before. I am getting excited about returning. It's worse being off the message than on it."

The function was also visited by Casillas' team-mates including Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria, Jose Callejon, Nacho and Kaka, though coach Jose Mourinho was absent.

Alonso told reporters that he didn't know yet whether he'd get over his groin issue in time for next Tuesday's Copa semi-final second leg at Barcelona's Camp Nou.

"I am in the recovery stage," the midfielder said. "I am trying to get better as soon as possible, to have gone the disquiet and reunite in top form. When I'll get ready plenty of people ask. I hope to be able to perform against Barca, but I don't have a solution right now."

Former Liverpool player Alonso stated that, with the link balanced at 1-1, whoever won first in the Champions League last 16 get back game at Manchester United on March 5 could be favourites to progress.

"They can have the help of their fans," he said. "It will be described as a concern. Along side it that scores first will undoubtedly be favourites. Old Trafford is a good surface and it is the kind of match we all like to play. The link is quite open."

Di Maria said that it will suit Madrid to be playing away from home in both of the future, potentially season-defining, activities.

"Things are going well and develop to carry on this way," he said. "We know that we have to have large matches in both competitions and that it will perhaps not be easy. German Couple Take Neighbours To Court Over Noisy Borussia ...

A couple in the German town of Hemer are taking their next-door neighbours to court over the ear-splitting noise created by the Borussia Dortmund flag they have fluttering in their garden.

Local Dortmund newspaper Der Westen have identified the couple as "Jutta and Walter H", who told the paper that the sound of the BVB flag flapping in the wind on the other side of the fence disrupts them from reading their books next door.

"I couldn't care less what is hanging there, it's a nuisance," Jutta H told Der Western, with her 62-year-old husband admitting that the complaint is nothing to do with team allegiances, despite him being a Duisburg fan.

Walter H told the paper that he hadn't been to a Duisburg game since the 1970s and that his problem with the flag is "only about the inconvenience" it causes.

A spokesman for Arnsberg administrative court has said that the case is unlikely to go to court until summer at the earliest. We'll endeavor to keep you posted on this one.

UEFA Europa League 2013: Early games repeat - SBNation.com

The defending champions Atletico Madrid were pulled out by Rubin Kazan, Spurs were preserved by a time goal from Mousa Dembele and Newcastle high level thanks to a goal from Shola Ameobi. Just another day in the Europa League. It had been a good day for two EPL clubs as Spurs were preserved by a eleventh hour goal and Newcastle advanced because of another half penalty. Things were not so excellent for the defending champions Atletico Madrid who were knocked out by Rubin Kazan. Here's a recap off every one of today's early action in the Europa League. Radamel Falcao scored in the 84th minute and Kazan's CAsar was red carded four minutes later, however it wasn't enough to truly save the defending champions from leaving the competition. Atletico had a lot of chances but by the time Falcao's free stop defeat Sergei Ryzhikov, it was too little too late. Ryzhikov was outstanding for Rubin Kazan making eight saves. Cluj's hopes of a remarkable 2nd knee comeback were dashed after 21 minute when Rodrigo Palacio broke behind the large defensive line and received goalkeeper MArio Felgueiras off his line before crossing to Fredy Guarin for a fairly pedestrian re-direction from close range. Guarin included a second right before halftime when Felgueiras fumbled a straightforward address in his or her own package and advantage was taken by Guarin getting the ball in the empty net. Things got worse for Cluj in the 80th moment when Mario Camora was red carded and seven minutes later Inter's Marco Benassi added a third purpose, rubbing a tad bit more sodium in the wound. Basel didn't seem enthusiastic about doing anything significantly more than defending their cause from the very first leg but things still got crazy late. After having a rather boring hour, Dnipro's expectations looked squashed when Nikola Kalinic was shown a straight red card in the 63rd moment. Significantly less than ten minutes later, Fabian Frei used Dnipro a lifeline choosing a handball in the field. Frei was sent down and Yevhen Seleznyov won the penalty, getting his part straight back in just a goal. Dnipro's dreams were finally extinguished in the 81st minute when Roman Zozulya fouled Valentin Stocker in the field and Fabian Schar buried his penalty test. Metalist Kharkiv 0-1 (0-1) Newcastle United Shola Ameobi's 64th minute punishment was all Newcastle had a need to advance to the Round of 16. Newcastle received the charge Oleksandr Goryainov and Papa Gueye got their signals fully entered and fouled Moussa Sissoko. Undoubtedly you will find shirtless Geodies celebrating in the streets of Kharkiv tonight. After a wild 3-3 first leg in Germany, Lazio turn off Monchengladbach behind first half targets from Antonio Candreva and Alvaro GonzAlez. Follow the link for a full match report. Stuttgart wasn't all that good in house first knee letting an absent target however it finished up not mattering thanks to targets from Arthur Boka and Christian Gentner.

UEFA Europa League 2013: Late games recap - SBNation.com

Liverpool miracle comeback comes up one goal short, Chelsea are saved in stoppage time and two German side are knocked out. Steaua Bucuresti rallied to force extra time against Ajax while Napoli went down without a fight against Plzen.

The late Europa League games were certainly more interesting than the early games. Liverpool nearly completed a miracle comeback but came up one goal short against Zenit St. Petersburg. The German sides Bayer Leverkusen and Hannover 96 both had bad days and exited the tournament, while Chelsea got a winner in stoppage time thanks to Eden Hazard. Here's a recap of all the late game action.

Ola John opened the scoring for Benfica in the 59th minute, dancing around defenders into the box on the left side before beating Bernd Leno with a superb shot into the upper corner. Bayer's Andre Schürrle scored in the 74th minute to give his side some hope, but Benfica hit right back two minutes later thanks to Nemanja Matic.

Cheick Diabate's goal in the 41st minute proved the difference for Bordeaux who will advance into the next round. Kiev certainly didn't go down with a fight managing 16 attempts but Bordeaux keeper Cedric Carrasso was up to the task making five saves and keeping the clean sheet on the day.

Fenerbahce, playing behind closed doors as a punishment from UEFA, took advantage of a red card against Borisov's Dmitri Baga in the 20th minute and found the winner thanks to a penalty right before halftime. Two minutes into first half stoppage time Andrey Gorbunov fouled Moussa Sow, giving Fener a penalty that was converted by Baroni Cristian. Apparently, despite they're being no fans in the stadium, a flare still ended up in the pitch during second half stoppage time, delaying the finish of the match.

The match was played behind closed door have UEFA were charged with the throwing of missiles and/or fireworks by fans during December's Europa League home game against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sergio Pinto gave Hannover some hope with a goal in the 70th minute but the home side couldn't find the second goal they needed to force extra time and fell on aggregate to Anzhi. Lacina Traore scored nine minutes into stoppage time to jazz up the final box score just a smidgen.

Olympiakos never threatened Levante who led 3-0 after the first leg. Obafemi Martins' goal in the eighth minute likely had a lot to do with it.

Ajax entered the match with a 2-goal lead but they couldn't hold on. Iasmin Latovlevici pulled Steaua within one in the 37th minute and Vlad Chiriches finished the comeback in the 75th minute, forcing the match to extra time (which is in progress at the moment).

Napoli didn't put up much of a fight in the first leg and not much changed in the second leg. Plzen's Jan Kovarik put the tie to bed for good four minutes in the second half, beating Morgan De Sanctis from close range. Stanislav Tecl scored in the 74th minute...essentially it was like adding a little more whipped cream to a really great sundae.

Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich, 2013 UEFA Champions League: Final ...

Arsenal's hopes of progressing to the Champions League quarterfinals were dealt a hefty blow by a rampant Bayern Munich at the Emirates as last year's runners-up romped to a 3-1 win.

Although the match began at least somewhat promisingly for Arsenal, who managed to give the visitors a bit of a scare when Theo Walcott burst down the left wing and earned a corner kick which error-prone goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a mess of. And then... well, things went downhill.

Bayern Munich possess an astonishing array of attacking talent, but perhaps the most impressive is 23-year-old Toni Kroos. And it was Kroos who opened the scoring seven minutes in, when the visitors overloaded the right side to allow Thomas Müller to send a cross to the top of the box. Aaron Ramsey lunged for a block but couldn't reach it, and Kroos met the delivery with a lovely 20-yard effort which bounced off the Emirates turf and buried itself in the back of Wojciech Szczesny's net.

The visitors weren't done there, and Arsenal made life difficult for themselves by giving away free kicks in dangerous positions. Daniel van Buyten saw his overly elaborate free kick routine fail to come off but managed to earn his side a corner anyway thanks to some odd defending, while Bastian Schweinsteiger's effort, earned after an awful Per Mertesacker giveaway, was deflected behind for a goalkick.

With Arsenal notoriously vulnerable on set pieces, it seemed like only a matter of time before their rearguard was breached once more. Bayern produced an opening via the somewhat strange method of punting long to Javi Martínez, who beat the offside trap and forced Laurent Koscielny to concede a corner. And from said corner, the visitors went 2-0.

Szczesny was at least partially to blame. Van Buyten's near-post header was hit hard but right at the 22-year-old keeper, and although Szczesny managed to stop the shot he failed to keep it out of the danger zone, virtually dropping it on Müller's toes. The surprised, off-balance midfielder reacted quickly, prodding the loose ball into the roof of the net for a second away goal.

A visibly frustrated Arsenal side took out their rage on Bayern's players. Bacary Sagna went into the book for a nasty foul on Kroos, and he was soon joined by Mikel Arteta as the former Everton man scythed down Mario Mandzukic on the Gunners' left.

There were some faint signs of hope, however. Mertesacker had a shot blocked, as did Theo Walcott a few minutes later, and there was good news when Schweinsteiger picked up a booking that will rule him out of the next leg for a foul on Ramsey, although a cynic might suspect he was deliberately picking up the card to reset his count. And the halftime score could have been worse -- Mandzukic should have put the visitors 3-0 up when he met Philipp Lahm's excellent delivery only to nod just wide of the post.

The Gunners began the second half with plenty of intent, and they managed to get back into the game thanks to a bizarre Lukas Podolski goal which saw the Germany international win a corner kick by deflecting Santi Cazorla's shot wide and nod home the set piece when Neuer opted to run around in circles underneath it for no reason after calling his own defenders off.

Bayern looked fairly confused at having conceded, but the goal seemed to further invigorate Arsenal and it no longer seemed wholly out of the question that they could get something out of the tie. But the visitors were still incredibly dangerous, and Szczesny was forced to save well from Kroos before Martínez hit a free header just over.

Arjen Robben was then thrown into the fray by Jupp Heynckes, and his first action saw him drift offside when it looked like Kroos would find him clean through on goal. His second was to force Podolski into a foul, one that earned the goalscorer a booking, and Ramsey got one as well when he hacked down Müller on the edge of the box. Fortunately for the Welshman, Schweinsteiger's subsequent effort was hit well high.

Arsenal were getting half-chances too, with the impressive Jack Wilshere and Podolski getting chances to drive into the box only for the former to lose control and the latter to shoot well wide. Then came the big opportunity. Tomas Rosicky sprayed a clever ball out wide, and Walcott's cross was met by substitute Olivier Giroud in the centre. The excellent work, however, was ruined by his shot, which was hit hard but straight at Neuer -- the goalkeeper wouldn't have been able to keep that shot out even if he'd wanted to.

And then Bayern struck again. Robben managed to get himself isolated in the centre against erstwhile left back Thomas Vermaelen, and the winger was able to find Lahm on the overlap. The subsequent cross was met by some tangle of Mandzukic and Sagna at the back post, and the ball looped over a helpless Szczesny and dropped into the back of the net in what seemed like slow motion.

Down 3-1, Arsenal didn't give up. Wilshere immediately drew another save out of Neuer, although like Giroud before him he directed his vicious effort straight at the goalkeeper when he should have done better. But the visitors were clearly the better side, and Mario Gomez very nearly made it four when his deflection forced a flying save from Szczesny before the striker blasted the rebound high and wide.

It seems unlikely that Bayern will regret Gomez's miss. After an uneventful three minutes of injury time, the Germans came away from the Emirates with an emphatic and thoroughly deserved win. Up by two with three away goals, they're all but through to the quarterfinals.

Rooney: Consistency is the key - Official Manchester United Website

Wayne Rooney thinks United's consistency is the driving force behind the 12-point lead at the head of the Barclays Premier League.

The striker missed the FA Cup tie with Reading due to a sinus problem but has been a key figure during the chase for glory on three fronts. In an exclusive Google+ DHL hang-out with Jonny Evans and Tom Cleverley, Rooney revealed the key to the side's splendid form.

"I think it's consistency," he replied when asked to explain why the Reds are riding so high at the summit. "We've been the most consistent team.

"Obviously, it's put us in a great position as, when other teams have dropped points, we've managed to keep winning or not lose too many games.

"I think the team spirit and desire to win all comes from the manager, who has been in place here for 26 years. So the players all know what we have to do and we all want to win.

"We all want to do it together, whether you're starting or a substitute or, sometimes, are not even on the bench. There is no bitterness between the players. We all want to work together and win together."

Arsenal v Bayern Munich – player ratings | Arseblog News – the ...

A second defeat in four days, this time at the hands of a quality Bayern Munich outfit, doesn't make for entertaining reading. Here are the player ratings after another disappointing night at the Emirates.

Wojciech Szczesny: 4/10 – Picked up where he left off against Blackburn, teeing up Thomas Muller beach volleyball style for Bayern's second. Looks increasingly nervous with the ball at his feet.

Bacary Sagna: 5/10 – Battled hard, but needed an outlet in front of him to maximise attacking intent. Left exposed at the back dealing with Mandzukic for the visitors' third.

Thomas Vermaelen: 4/10 – Out of position and seemingly out of his depth. Hampered by an early booking he got a proper rollicking from Wilshere for backing off Muller in the first half. Not aided by lackadaisical midfield it was telling that all three goals stemmed from action on his wing.

Laurent Koscielny: 5/10 – Unnecessarily hasty clearance led to Bayern's first goal and nowhere to be seen when Muller scored second from inside six-yard box. Needs to take more responsibility for pushing forward when fed ball by Szczesny.

Per Mertesacker: 3/10 – Didn't track Van Buyten for second and given run around by Mandzukic who came close to scoring a third with his head before half-time. Didn't enjoy being closed down quickly by Bayern attack which took toll on passing quality.

Mikel Arteta: 5/10 – Picked up a booking putting himself about a bit, but his dedication to being a defensive midfielder means he takes no risks when passing. So much sideways distribution hints at Denilsification.

Jack Wilshere: 7/10 – It's getting repetitive pinpointing him as the best of a bad bunch, but that was again the case. Led the charge after half-time and always willing to take on a man before pushing forward.

Aaron Ramsey: 6/10 – Shunted into a wider position after his promising stint in Arteta's role he gave it his all but doesn't have the pace to provide an attacking threat on the flanks. Passing for the most part was neat and simple.

Santi Cazorla: 4/10 – Pretty much anonymous all game. Went looking for the ball in central positions leaving Sagna having to pound up and down the right on his own. Switched to left in last 15 minutes but let Lahm race past him unhindered in build up to Bayern's killer third.

Theo Walcott: 5/10 – Arsenal needed his pace on the wings but resorted to using him as a target man which expectedly didn't work. Dante seemed to learn lessons from recent England-Brazil friendly to nullify his threat.

Lukas Podolski: 4/10 – Got a goal but did next to nothing on the left-wing. Rarely troubled Lahm, seldom went looking for the ball and might as well have been learning the rest of London.

Olivier Giroud: 5/10 - Had a chance to equalise with his first touch but fired straight at Neuer. Little service after that.

Tomas Rosicky: 6/10 - Quick to turn defence into attack his influence was soon dampened by Bayern's third which killed tempo of the game.

Chris Smalling keen to make mark - Official Manchester United ...

Chris Smalling is determined to play a key role in Manchester United's charge towards three trophies this season but knows his own performances will dictate the extent of his involvement.

The young defender's season has been blighted by injury so far, yet he's still managed to make 18 appearances for the first-team.

"No matter whether you are young or old you want to play in as many games as you can," he said. "Luckily we are going well in all competitions. But when you get your chance, you need to take it. You don't give the manager an excuse to leave you out.

Squad rotation has long been part of life at Manchester United. And while Smalling admits he'd like to play every game, he's also aware of the system's benefits.

"You're at one of the biggest clubs in the world and the manager needs to do what he does. We are happy at the minute because everyone is getting games. Long may that continue.

"When you are injured you want to play. When you are fit you just want to play every week. But there is a large degree of patience required. You can't get too frustrated."

However it seems unlikely Sir Alex Ferguson is going to be making a move for the young striker anytime soon given he has the likes of Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in his Old Trafford armoury.

Report: Arsenal 1-3 Bayern Munich|Arseblog News a the Arsenal...

System face an uphill task this evening to be eligible for a the next round of the Champions League after a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich. Arsene Wenger picked a strong side, with Theo Walcott implemented in advance and Lukas Podolski facing his old club. But the Gunners could have gotten down to a start when Toni Kroos dismissed the readers into a 7th moment cause, shooting into the bottom and past Wojciech Szczesny. The Germans doubled their lead from a corner in the 21st minute when the Polish keeper didn't handle a near article header and home was tapped by Thomas Mueller from close range. There were quickfire yellow cards for Bacary Sagna and Mikel Arteta as Arsenal attempted to up the strength and get back in the game, from the referee who looked out of his degree. Strategy did get forward sometimes but Bayernas extremely efficient and persistent defense snuffed out most the risk. Per Mertesacker had a go blocked, failed to discover a way through and while Walcott and Cazorla tried. Late in the half a straightforward Bayern assault saw Lahm combination for Mandzukic who had got between the centre-halves, but his strong header went just wide of the post. A significant let down for Arsenal and half-time arrived with a of boos, straight away drowned out by way of a substantial chant of aCome on Arsenala. Arsene Wenger made no improvements at the break and started well, keeping property but still finding it hard to break Bayern down. But following a Santi Cazorla opportunity deflected off Lukas Podolski the referee gave a corner to Arsenal, and from the resulting set-piece the former Bayern person got one back. The ball came across, they allow it jump in your community and Podolski headed into an empty web as Neuer came rushing out. The Germans seemed content to allow Arsenal have the ball, seeking to hit on the split and once more Kroos presented some threat, shooting well at Szczesny, who was simply found in no-manas land again from the resulting place but luckily they headed over. As yellow cards were dished out more by the referee to Arsenal men simply for sporting red and having limbs, Schweinsteiger shot over from the free activate a dangerous situation, before Jack Wilshere very nearly ran through the Bayern defence only to overrun it together with his final touch. A Podolski photo was then cleaned from inside the 6 garden box before the goalscorer was replaced by Olivier Giroud and Tomas Rosicky came on for Aaron Ramsey. Inside a moment Walcott and Giroud combined, the cross from the best hand side was met sweetly by the French international but his shot went straight at Neuer. It absolutely was looking good for Arsenal but in the 77th minute Bayern got their two purpose lead back each time a Lahm combination from the right hand side identified Mandzukic whose work from close range went upright in the air, and landed back down in the internet. There was a little fortune to it but Vermaelen was left to manage two participants and the guests exploited the overlap well. Jack Wilshere then pushed Neuer into a save after a good run before a deflected chance wrong-footed Szczesny but he did enough to drive the ball wide, making Gomez to blast over from a small angle. Strategy looked for another goal which will provide a 2nd leg lifeline, but none was forthcoming, indicating they want to go to Germany in several days time and report at the very least three goals to go through. Itad be described as a huge shock if which were to happen, really the probabilities have become thin indeed, and the past concrete trophy of the season undoubtedly out of reach and looks well. The Arsenal fans sang of these love for the team, even as we encounter another beat, itas some thing worth remembering because the game drew to a close.
