Mired in mediocrity throughout the season, one of the Los Angeles Lakers' main concerns has been whether the team is at its best with Kobe Bryant as a passer or a scorer. It is clear that this recent incarnation of the Lakers is far better when Bryant is the team's main facilitator.
While claiming his most recent two NBA titles, Bryant was able to utilize his elite scoring capabilities to his heart's content due to the offense revolving around lane spacing and interior dominance that actually relied on Bryant's offensive dominance to create shots off the attention he received.
However, the current makeup of this Lakers' team and the system they run requires spacing and ball movement to be fully effective. Thus, Bryant's ball-stopping style of play stagnates the offense even more so than usual in Mike D'Antoni's system.
While previous Lakers championship teams relied on a modified triangle offense that allowed for Bryant isolation plays that meshed well with post-ups by Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, this current incarnation of the Lakers utilizes a run-and-gun style with players that do not excel in a half-court offense.
With Steve Nash being a shell of his former self, his greatest value still comes from his passing and his shooting. However, with Bryant handling the ball the majority of the time, Bryant's passing is needed to initiate the offense.
It is clear that although Bryant is a very good player off the ball, he is not in his comfort zone unless he is the focal point of the offense.
Thus, If Bryant isn't comfortable handing an aging Nash the reins to the offense, Bryant has to take on the responsibility of being the main facilitator.

Newcastle United: 6 Reasons the Magpies' Bad Year Is just a Blessing in Disguise - Bleacher Record
After finishing fifth in the Premier League in 2011-12 and earning a place in the Europa League, the Toon looked to be headed in the right direction.
Newcastle were embarrassingly exposed for their lack of squad depth, and any hopes of reaching the heights of the previous season were dashed before Christmas.
Relegation became a serious concern. Europe no longer seemed important. The players seemed confused and uninspired, and Alan Pardew didn't look like he had any answers to his side's collapse.
However, the floodgates have slammed shut and the side has recovered. Now that the club is a little safer than they have been before, this is a time to examine the positives that have come from the players, staff and executives of Newcastle being put in such an uncomfortable situation.
The promise of the future, at least for now, outweighs the pain of today. Here are six reasons why the Magpies' poor season Is a blessing in disguise.
With Newcastle United languishing just outside the relegation zone entering the January transfer window, owner Mike Ashley had no choice but to act.
French Ligue 1 stars Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko and Massadio Haïdara as well as hot young Dutch prospect Kevin Mbabu now find themselves in Geordie territory, and what a difference they have made.
Debuchy, Gouffran and Sissoko immediately entered the starting XI, with Yanga-Mbiwa replacing an injured Fabricio Coloccini in central defense and Haïdara featuring prominently in the club's Europa League fixtures.
It is tough to imagine what position the Magpies would be in if these acquisitions hadn't been made, with relegation seeming like more than just a possibility.
And even though Newcastle are still within striking distance of the bottom three, the quality and depth the side now possess make that scenario much less likely.
Now that Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias has admitted that the club made a mistake by not making enough major acquisitions over the summer to the Evening Chronicle, the pressure will be on Ashley and his team to invest much more cash in the next summer transfer window.
Some fans said at the time—and all fans should agree now—that only signing Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana and the mystery man that is Romain Amalfitano was not enough for a club preparing to take on European football.
This summer, fan pressure will be at an all-time high to make purchases, specifically a striker and a potential replacement for Fabricio Coloccini.
The man Mike Ashley (and most of England) wants is Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, a striker from Ligue 1 side St. Etienne.
He won't be an easy signing, but with Mike Ashley personally taking an interest in the player, not to mention the club's current investment in French talent, this deal has real potential.
Newcastle heavily pursued Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy over the summer, but came up short and were unable to bring him Tyneside until January.
Throughout much of the 2012-13 season, Newcastle's most important players have been forced off the pitch for long stretches of time and some footballers who weren't expecting much playing time found themselves in the first team.
Rob Elliot, an Alan Pardew signing from Charlton Athletic who had yet to feature in the Premier League, was forced into action in late February after an injury to Tim Krul suffered in a Europa League fixture against Metalist Kharkiv.
Newcastle fans were not particularly thrilled with Elliot's only previous first-team action against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup in 2011, and when Southampton managed to score past him in the third minute of his first match, many had visions of relegation dancing through their heads.
Since then, however, Elliot has proven more than capable of handling his place between the posts, and his excellent distribution of the ball even led to an assist on a Papiss Cisse wonder goal.
With Steve Harper set to move on in the summer, the Toon Army can rest assured that Tim Krul won't be the only quality keeper in the squad.
Another bright spot has been James Perch, who has proven to be a useful and vastly versatile player. He has been able to cover wherever needed in central midfield and all over the back line, and he even picked up his first career goal with the Magpies against Manchester United in December.
Sylvain Marveaux and Gael Bigirimana have also made the most of their newfound first-team chances, with the former producing amazing assists in back-to-back matches for Papiss Cisse goals that would win matches against Stoke City and Anzhi Makhachkala, and the latter proving to be an exciting midfield prospect with a high work rate.

In the absence of the injured Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor, the former Wycombe Wanderers man kept the hearts of Newcastle supporters in their throats every time the ball came his way.
His defensive positioning is reminiscent of a kitten chasing a laser pointer, and offensively his ridiculous constant hoof-balling was disastrous for Newcastle's attacking creativity.
Thankfully, the presence of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa should keep him off even the bench for at least the rest of the season, and he may have featured in his last game for Newcastle.
Youngsters Sammy Ameobi and Shane Ferguson also failed to live up to expectations, proving not quite ready for the spotlight. Now on loan to Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, respectively, they might not get another chance at first-team action for quite some time.
Finally, Gabriel Obertan once again has proven that he can do two things: run really fast and avoid being particularly helpful.
Xisco and Nile Ranger didn't have to change much to fit in with this season's underachieving squad. They'd been underachieving their whole Newcastle careers.
Xisco only featured in nine Premier League matches in his five years with the club, scoring one goal. While typically spending most of his time on loan, this season Xisco hung around the Newcastle reserves reminding everyone how nice it would be to have his £5.7 million transfer fee back.
With the whole of Newcastle struggling to survive in the Premier League, the wastes of space that were Xisco and Ranger became exponentially more frustrating, and Derek Llambias was forced to act.
Xisco's contract termination was a minor financial relief, and Nile Ranger's release by mutual agreement was a decision that had to be made.
Cutting out the squad's dead weight has proven addition by subtraction, and now their roster spots can be filled by players filled with potential who really want to be there.

Call it wishful thinking, but this writer would like to believe the money that would have been going to Nile Ranger will now be spent on adding slides to St James' Park.
Regardless of where the money comes from, slides look to be a genuine possibility to improve the flow of foot traffic at the Magpies' stadium, and it's a brilliant idea.
Newcastle fans have always supported their club through good times and bad, but in a tough season like this one, wouldn't it be easier to come to a match knowing that if things go south, you can slide right out of the stadium?
This all may seem silly, but it is certainly symbolic of the new hope for the coming seasons that has sprung out of the changes the club has undergone.
The rest of this season (both domestically and in Europe) and the seasons to come bring with them more potential than Newcastle sides have possessed for years, and if Alan Pardew really deserved his Manager of the Year awards last season, he'll be more than able to lead this squad well on its way to glory.

Updated NFL Draft Stock Watch for Manti Te'o Following Notre Dame's Pro Day
Now that the linebacker's pre-draft workouts are complete and there's less than a month until the draft, it's time to update his stock.
Frankly, he didn't do much to help or hurt how he's viewed as a prospect by NFL general managers, head coaches and scouts.
It was a full tenth of a second faster than the official time he clocked in Indianapolis at the scouting combine in late February.
Te'o is and always was a slower linebacker whose game was predicated on being ultra-physical at the line of scrimmage.
He thrived in coverage in 2012 due to decisive decision-making which was the result of amazing instincts and ability to quickly react to where the opposing quarterback appeared to be going with the football.
Starting at the 2:19 mark, ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay break down Te'o's game with somewhat opposing views.
Both make good points, but I side more with Kiper Jr. because of his point regarding the handful of inside linebackers that didn't time particularly well in the 40-yard dash that have gone on to be impactful, three-down players.
On tape, his strength is apparent and was refined when it came to getting off most blocks and sifting through traffic. However, when it comes to staying fundamentally sound as a tackler, Te'o could use improvement.
Against Stanford and especially in the national title game against Alabama, Te'o got himself into great position to make plays at-or-near the line of scrimmage but lunged at the ball-carrier and missed what should have been easy tackles.
Sports Illustrated's Chris Burke wrote a succinct summary of Te'o as a prospect and how his Pro Day barely influenced his draft stock:
At this point, there is very little mystery when it comes to his game. He is not the greatest athlete you'll ever see, nor is he capable of shifting positions — like so many other linebackers in this draft class — and playing outside in a 3-4 or 4-3. Te'o's on-field performance always has surpassed what one might expect from a player with his physical traits.

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler predicted LSU's Kevin Minter to the Baltimore Ravens at No. 32 overall instead of Te'o, but Bleacher Report's own Matt Miller gave the Green Bay Packers Te'o at No. 26 overall in his latest mock draft.
Manti Te'o is a polarizing draft prospect, but in the right system he should have a long and somewhat productive NFL career at the inside linebacker spot.

A West Bromwich benefits cheat jailed for a "comprehensive and professional" campaign of bogus claims totalling more than £27,000 has failed to convince top judges she did not receive a fair trial.
Rashpal Kaur, aged 44, raked in excess housing and council tax benefit over five years after lying about her circumstances to Sandwell Council.
The former benefits office worker, of Europa Avenue, was jailed for 32 months after she was found guilty of 22 offences – including 12 counts of making false statements – at Wolverhampton Crown Court in October.
Top judges at London's Court of Appeal rejected a challenge by Kaur against her convictions, dismissing arguments that the trial judge was wrong to continue her trial after she missed its final stages due to "anxiety and depression".
Lord Justice Treacy said Kaur failed to declare she was no longer a single parent, and that she was related to her landlord, when claiming council tax and housing benefit between 2003 and 2007, pocketing £27,281 in excess payments.
More than £270,000 had also moved through her bank account during this period, giving rise to three convictions for converting criminal property, the appeal judge added. She was also convicted of four counts of failing to declare a change in circumstances and two of producing false documents. The jury also found her guilty of perverting the course of justice over phoney allegations concocted against a witness at her trial.
On jailing her, the trial judge described Kaur's "professional" scam as the "most comprehensive case of benefit fraud" he had ever come across.
Kaur's barrister, Mr Philip Brunt, argued that the trial judge erred in refusing to dismiss the jury and order a retrial when she failed to appear in court to complete her evidence in April last year due to health problems. But Lord Justice Treacy, sitting with Mr Justice Saunders and Judge John Milford QC, said she had suffered no prejudice by the case proceeding in her absence.

Woods back on top in golf
Seconds after Rickie Fowler made a 40-foot birdie putt on the 12th hole to pull within two shots of the lead, Woods posed over his 25-foot birdie putt until he swept the putter upward in his left hand and marched toward the cup as it dropped for a birdie.
Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Monday and returned to No. 1 in the world for the first time since October 2010, the longest spell of his career. After all that time, after so much turmoil with his personal life and his health, Woods looks as good as ever.
He essentially wrapped up his eighth title at Bay Hill with an 8-iron out of a fairway bunker on the par-5 16th that easily cleared the water and landed safely on the green for a two-putt birdie. Woods dangled his tongue out of his mouth as the ball was in the air, another sign of his swagger.
Just like his other two wins this year, Woods never let anyone get closer than two shots in the final round. With a conservative bogey he could afford on the final hole, he closed with a 2-under 70 for a two-shot win over Justin Rose.
Woods walked off the 18th green waving his putter over his head — truly a magic wand at Bay Hill — to acknowledge the fans who have seen this act before. His eighth win in the Arnold Palmer Invitational tied a PGA Tour record that had not been touched in 48 years.
"If I get healthy, I know I can play this game at a high level," Woods said. "I know I can be where I'm contending in every event, contending in major championships and being consistent day in and day out — if I got healthy. That was the first step in the process. Once I got there, then my game turned."
A year ago, he came to Bay Hill without having won in more than 2½ years. He left this year having won six times in his last 20 starts on the PGA Tour.
Woods fell as low as No. 58 in the world as he coped with the collapse of his marriage, a loss of sponsors and injuries to his left leg. One week after he announced he was dating Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn, Woods returned to the top of golf.
Asked if there was any correlation to him winning right after going public with his relationship, Woods smiled and said, "You're reading way too much into this."
Fowler pulled to within two shots with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole, but after he and Woods made bogey on the 15th, Fowler went at the flag on the par-5 16th and came up a few yards short and into the water. Fowler put another ball into the water and made triple bogey.
"I was swinging it well. I made a few putts, and trying to put a little pressure on them, let them know I was there," Fowler said. "Just would like to have that 7-iron back on 16. Just kind of a touch heavy."
Woods played it safe on the 18th, and nearly holed a 75-foot par putt that even drew a big smile from the tournament host.
Woods tied the tour record of eight wins in a single tournament. Sam Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times from 1938 to 1965 at two golf courses. Woods tied his record for most wins at a single golf course, having also won eight times at Torrey Pines, including a U.S. Open.
"I don't really see anybody touching it for a long time," Palmer said while Woods made his way up the 18th fairway. "I had the opportunity to win a tournament five times, and I knew how difficult that was."
He pulled to within two shots of Woods with a birdie on the 16th. Woods was in the group behind him in the fairway bunker on the par 5, and hit 8-iron over the water and onto the middle of the green for a two-putt birdie to restore his margin.
"He plays every shot like he plays them on Sunday," Rose said. "His intensity is the same on Thursday often as it is on Sunday, and that makes Sunday a lot less different for him. He plays in that kind of atmosphere far more regularly than a lot of guys do, and it's an adjustment for most of us. It's a known for him."
Fowler had to settle for a 73 and a tie for third with Mark Wilson (71), Keegan Bradley (71) and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (72).
Rory McIlroy had been No. 1 since he won the PGA Championship last August. He can reclaim the No. 1 ranking by winning the Houston Open this week. Woods heads home to south Florida for two weeks before the Masters.
This was the fourth time in his career that he already had three PGA Tour wins before the Masters — he didn't win a green jacket in any of the previous years (2000, 2003 and 2008). More telling, perhaps, is that Woods has won back-to-back starts for the first time since the Buick Open and Bridgestone Invitational in August 2009.
Fowler, his first time playing with Woods in the final group, opened with eight pars when he needed to be making up ground. And when he finally had a few openings on the back nine, Woods refused to let him through.
Woods salvaged a two-putt par with a 7-footer on the 11th hole to keep a three-shot lead. On the next hole, Fowler looked to gain some momentum when he made a 40-foot birdie putt only for Woods to match him with that 25-foot birdie.
Woods produced some absurd statistics with the putter this week, making 19 of 28 putts from between 7 feet and 20 feet.
He walked off the green to share a handshake with Palmer, along with a big smile and some words that Woods said were best kept private. He left the course in that familiar blue blazer that goes to the winner.
It's the 11th time that Woods has gone back to No. 1, tied with Greg Norman since the ranking began in 1986. Still to be determined is how long Woods stays there this time.

Howland bids farewell to UCLA after firing
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ben Howland kept it classy in departing as UCLA basketball coach, thanking the athletic director who had fired him a day earlier while noting the high expectations that come with running a program that owns a record 11 national championships.
Howland was applauded by supporters as he walked into a news conference at Pauley Pavilion for the last time Monday. The 55-year-old coach expressed gratitude for his 10-year run in Westwood, the longest tenure since John Wooden retired in 1975 after 27 years on the sideline.
Howland says he's excited about the future and wants to coach again, although he doesn't know where or when that will happen. He says he wanted to speak out one last time at UCLA so he could publicly thank his current and former players and his staff.

Tottenham Hotspur: 5 Biggest Summer Transfer Objectives for Andre Villas-Boas - Bleacher Report
Following on from last week's general look at Tottenham Hotspur's transfer activity in the coming months, we now take a look at what might be Andre Villas-Boas' biggest objectives in the market this summer.
There is a lot still to happen this season that may have implications here, especially pertaining to the quality of signings Tottenham might make. Whatever happens, there are areas in the squad that already can be described as needing attention.
Gareth Bale's future is to be an issue for some time, and with plenty written and spoken about it already, that matter will not be rehashed here. It is pretty obvious Tottenham will not be keen to sell him, especially if they qualify for the Champions League.
Whether Bale stays or not, Villas-Boas might be keen to bring in some added competition out wide in midfield, with Spurs relying so heavily on the Welshman and Aaron Lennon.
Bale's deployment in central positions has meant he is no longer regarded primarily as a winger. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey are among those at the club who have covered out left in his absence there and given steady to good service. But none can quite replicate the speedy threat provided by Bale and Lennon down the flanks, nor the balance it gives the team.
Andros Townsend—currently on loan at Queens Park Rangers—could very well see his game time upped next season on the back of his form with the Hoops. Increased involvement for the 21-year-old would add to the depth in the position, something that Spurs are paying for with Lennon's current injury (less we forget, he has had problems in successive seasons too).
However, Villas-Boas might still like to bring in more pace for the position, especially in left wing if he intends to persist with Bale centrally. Even if Spurs' style changes, their speed has proven such an effective feature of their game, it would be a shame for them to move away from this.
Hugo Lloris has cemented his status as Tottenham's first-choice goalkeeper. The club confirmed their intention to keep Brad Friedel as his backup into next season by giving him a contract extension.
With the veteran keeper almost certainly to retire after the 2013-14 campaign, it is important Villas-Boas begins thinking about who will replace him as the next challenger for Lloris.
Scotland Under-21 international Jordan Archer, currently on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, may be deemed good enough to succeed Friedel. If not, there will be some interesting considerations as to who will come in.
Goalkeeping fundamentals like shot-stopping and a general command of the penalty area will be a necessity. With so much being made of Lloris' ability to act as a sweeper when Spurs' defense are caught out too far forward, similar quickness and alertness may also be on the list of attributes required.
Left-back is a position where the extent of the issue may not even be clear to Villas-Boas. If he is happy with Benoit Assou-Ekotto as his starter there, then it is mostly a case of the depth behind the Cameroon international.
Jan Vertonghen is a fine full-back, but Tottenham would rather him play in his preferred position of central defense. Kyle Naughton has covered out left too, and while he has improved on his weaker side, he is also better served competing on his natural flank out right.
Danny Rose may be open to coming back and competing with Assou-Ekotto when his loan at Sunderland expires. However, having gotten use to more regular starts, the converted midfielder might not want to miss out any minutes any longer.
Then there is January signing Zeki Fryers. The versatile defender has been receiving generally positive reviews for performances in Spurs' Under-21 squad. By August, Fryers might be ready to contend for a first-team spot.
If he is not, and Rose moves on, Villas-Boas has a few things to consider in the position. Does he buy young, in search of someone who might become good? Or does he chance a more experienced player to immediately challenge Assou-Ekotto?
Tottenham have players in midfield who can pass the ball and get the team going in the right direction. Mousa Dembele has been a standout here. Others like Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby have an eye for a pass, and given more regular opportunities might become greater creative contributors in the team.
Tom Carroll has caught the eye with his vision and the accompanying movement he uses to get his team ticking (playing similarly to a younger version of Luka Modric). Villas-Boas might decide Carroll, along with the others mentioned, might have enough between them to go alongside the more creatively direct work of his wingers and (hopefully more so again soon) his strikers.
He might also deem his team as lacking that fulcrum at its heart, someone to pull the strings and through whom so much of their play will go.
Players of genuine quality here are few and far between, but are generally a common denominator in some of the best sides around (someone like Wesley Sneijder in Inter Milan's treble season or David Silva at Manchester City).
Spurs have been linked with players of that ilk this season—Sneijder and Joao Moutinho's names having frequently cropped up. They have got by fairly well without them, but undoubtedly there have been occasions when Villas-Boas' team might have done with someone with a special understanding of how to unlock stubborn opposition defenses.
Tottenham's lack of goals of late from Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor has been heavily discussed already, and just like the Bale situation, it is a subject that has grown most tiring.
Regardless of what the aforementioned forwards do before the year is out, if Villas-Boas is serious about pushing on he needs someone who can guarantee around 20 goals a season. As for who can bring that, well, that is not so certain.
Upfront is an area Spurs have struggled for consistency in since the days of the Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane partnership. With decent backup from Defoe and then Darren Bent, they not only provided goals, but a clear identity of how the team would work in the final third.
What Villas-Boas decides here probably ranks as his most important decision in the transfer market this summer. Spurs might get by okay with the contributions of others in the team, but without guaranteed goals (or as near as possible) their greater ambitions may struggle to be fulfilled.

Long before the time of Sheikh Mansour, Abu Dhabi and Etihad, our photographers were there to capture the Blues' golden era and the men who made it possible.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, stars like Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell and Franny Lee were never far from the action, as seen in several images here taken during clashes with Spurs and Arsenal.
A picture of Tony Book, sitting on his team-mates' shoulders with the League Cup at Wembley in 1970, marks one of the club's most memorable achievements.
In a lighter moment, snappers were there when a dog ran onto the pitch at Maine Road – followed by several grinning supporters – during a goalless draw with Birmingham City in 1982.
Many fans will recall the weekly scenes at Maine Road, when mounted police patrolled as thousands gathered in the terraced streets outside the ground.
The oldest photograph in the collection was taken about 1936, when Northern Ireland international Peter Doherty is seen keeping his eyes firmly on ball.
Doherty was part of the Blues side which won the 1937 league title, and went on to manage his home side of Northern Ireland, and later Bristol City.
During a 1969 press shoot, which is unlikely to be repeated in the modern era, assistant manager Malcolm Allison hoisted up two girls wearing the Blues' new strip.
We've included two other photos of Allison, both reclining with a large, trademark cigar, and sharing a joke with former manager Joe Mercer before their well-documented rift in the early 1970s.
The pair formed the heart of the management team which led Manchester City through their most successful era in the late 1960s and early 1970s, winning seven trophies in seven years.
In 1956, the keeper continued playing despite breaking his neck during a collision with Birmingham's Peter Murphy during a game.

Hamlin has compression fracture in lower back
Denny Hamlin suffered a compression fracture in his lower spine during Sunday's last-lap crash at Fontana, Calif., his racing team said Monday.
Joe Gibbs Racing disclosed the injury and said Hamlin was expected to be released soon from a Southern California hospital to return home. He has what is called an L1 compression fracture; essentially, the first vertebra in the lumbar section of his spine collapsed.
There was no immediate word on how long his recovery would take. JGR said he will be evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates later this week.
Hamlin was airlifted from the track after a collision with Joey Logano on the penultimate turn sent him nearly head-on into the inside wall. Logano managed to finish third despite wrecking into the outside wall after hitting Hamlin, who spun Logano last week at Bristol and sparked a bitter post-race confrontation.
"He probably shouldn't have done what he did last week, so that's what he gets," Logano said Sunday after the race won by Kyle Busch.
Tony Stewart got into a post-race shoving match with Logano, who aggressively blocked Stewart out of a late restart. Hamlin's team expects Logano to be fined.
Hamlin got himself out of the car, but then slumped to the ground beside it before an ambulance arrived. He was eventually airlifted out due to traffic around the track. His girlfriend, Jordan Fish, tweeted afterward that Hamlin was "alert n awake, main concern is his back."
The injury is a bit more common in open-wheel racing, which has had three incidents of drivers breaking their backs since 2009.
Will Power broke several vertebrae in his lower back in a 2009 crash during practice at Sonoma and missed that event and the final three races of the season. He couldn't train for two months and wore a back brace for almost four months.
He also suffered a compression fracture of his fourth thoracic vertebrae in the 2011 season finale at Las Vegas but missed no racing as he healed during the offseason.
Justin Wilson fractured his fifth thoracic vertebra in 2011 and missed the last six races of the season. Wilson said he was in a back brace for 10 weeks.

Juventus: Is Antonio Conte Contemplating Another Tactical Change?
It's one of the oldest questions in football, and the first every coach has to ask himself: do I get players to fit my system or do I change the system depending on the players I have on my team?
For Antonio Conte, it's been the latter. The Juventus manager has seen his stock rise tremendously in the past two years, and his tactical evolution has been a big reason for it.
B/R's tactical expert Sam Tighe might be his biggest fan, and he wrote an article last week detailing Conte's rise to fame in which he explained the evolution his team has gone through at a tactical level.
In short, Conte went from a basic 4-4-2 to a fairly extreme 3-5-2 in a span of six months in an attempt to find a system that made optimal use of the personnel available to him.
To say his evolution was a success would be an understatement. Juventus won the Italian Serie A in his first season at the helm, going undefeated in the process. This year, the Bianconeri again find themselves at the top of the table and in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.
The 3-5-2 works because it fits Conte's best 11 like a glove. It allows Juve to field their three world class centre backs, gives Andrea Pirlo two dependable bodyguards in Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio, creates a ton of space for the team's stable of athletic wing backs and puts players like Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucinic right in front of goal, where they have to worry less about filling lanes and can focus exclusively on creating chances.
There would appear to be no reason for Conte to change his approach, but the Italian Serie A is not just your average league. Italians take tactics incredibly seriously, and they're good at it. It's only a matter of time before teams catch up with what it is you're doing, and Conte knows this.
Spanish striker Fernando Llorente will be joining the team this summer, and he provides us with a first clue. Llorente is a big, physical forward with an excellent nose for goal and a strong aerial game. Even though he should be capable of playing in a system with two forwards, he plays his best football as a lonely striker surrounded by creative wingers.
Then there are the reports of the Bianconeri's strong interest in Schalke's Julian Draxler and Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez (per Goal.com, here and here). While both players would theoretically be able to play as a second striker, they do most of their damage cutting inside from the wing and are best used in space.
Sebastian Giovinco is another one of these quick, agile players that can be deadly when given the space to roam the field. The Juve youth product has seen his productivity fall this season as a result of his continued usage as a second striker, and played his best football on loan at Parma as a winger in a three man front line.
Lastly, there's the arrival of Federico Peluso. After a rough start for the Bianconeri, the wing back has put together a solid string of performances and seems to have gained Conte's trust to the point where's he's starting over Kwadwo Asamoah, one of the team's strongest performers in the first half of the season.
Peluso has done a good job as the left winger in the 3-5-2, but he is most comfortable as a left back in a four man defense.
Conte has tinkered with a 4-3-3 lineup in the past, and he'll still occasionally use it when the 3-5-2 isn't getting the job done. Should we be expecting a full-time return to the 4-3-3 next season?
While I think it's a strong possibility, there is another system that would seem to be a perfect fit for this Juventus team, and a natural evolution from the 3-5-2: the 3-4-3.
Juve's three-man back line of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli is simply too strong to just toss to the side. There's a reason the Bianconeri have the best defensive record in the UCL at the time of this article: the back line is rock solid.
The two formations are similar: They both house three centre-backs and have a presence up top; they both hinge largely on the successes of failures of their respective wing-backs.
When a formation fails to win a wide battle, it has to change. Case in point, Mircea Lucescu's Shakhtar Donetsk ditched the 4-4-2 diamond, which hinged on its explosive full-backs, when Darijo Srna and Razvan Rat lost the wide battle against AC Milan in 2008.
That's where the 3-4-3 comes in—you've got wing-backs and wingers. With four players situated into the wide areas, you equal the amount usually found in a 4-4-2, a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3.
This means the battle to stay touchline wide doesn't hinge upon the left- and right-wing-backs, and if it's not going their way, the wingers can join in.
The 3-4-3 would solve Juve's riddle up front. Even without any additional reinforcements, the current personnel would be able to excel in a three-man front line with Giovinco on the left, Vucinic on the right and Fernando Llorente as the spearhead.
The three-man back line would be left intact, and the midfield would open up a lot of interesting possibilities. Kwadwo Asamoah has proven his abilities as a left winger, but his natural position is that of a centre midfielder. As a pure left midfielder, he could flourish.
Claudio Marchisio also has a lot of experience as a LM, and he does a lot of his damage on the wing in the current 3-5-2. Even Arturo Vidal seems to have embraced playing in a wider role in recent weeks, as he has developed a tendency to drop onto the right wing.
The MVP midfield in his current form works brilliantly, and as a fan I would wish to see as little changes as possible. But let's not forget that Andrea Pirlo is getting up there in age, and chances are that next season will be his last of playing at the high level we have grown accustomed to. You don't just find another player to plug into the role of regista and expect him to be as effective as arguably the greatest regista the world has ever seen.
You can be sure coach Conte is already thinking hard about how to fix that problem, and if spending big bucks on someone like PSG's Marco Verratti isn't an option, a tactical change might be.
The safest bet might be a dynamic system that changes depending on the personnel: Asamoah can play as a wing back in the 3-5-2 with Andrea Pirlo on the pitch, and move to central midfield once the maestro takes a seat on the bench and the system changes to a 3-4-3.
The 3-5-2 can easily be converted to a 4-3-3 when the team is in need of extra bodies in the box, and the 3-4-3 can take on the face of the more conservative 3-5-2 when Juve has to defend against a strong opponent.
Antonio Conte is a tactical genius, and we can only speculate as to what it is he's planning to do with his new toys. But if the transfer activity is any indication, change is on its way.

As much as fans of the English Premier League abound in Nigeria, and violence has followed rival matches, no EPL fan in Nigeria has truly shown love to the club he supports to the extent of bearing the club's name or naming kids after the club you so much love….but a Liverpool FC fan has changed his surname to Anfield.
Student Axel Gogstad, of Norway, has legally changed his surname in support of his favourite football club, The Mirror reports.
"I changed my name to Anfield when I turned 18 back in Norway, I've had it for nine years now," the 27-year-old sports journalism student said.
"I've always been proud of my name but I thought if I put 'Anfield' to it I'd be even more proud of it and I can carry Liverpool wherever I'm going."
The name change has resulted in Gogstad receiving some strange looks when travelling through Manchester Airport to get to and from Liverpool.
He added: "I get a little stick from Manchester United fans, obviously. When I'm in the airport in Manchester, customs give me a shake of the head – but it has been good."
