West Bromwich community heroes receive awards - Sandwell Council (press release)

West Bromwich celebrated people and organisations that help to make the town great at a "wonderful" and "inspirational" community awards event on Friday (22 March) evening.

Fifty finalists across a range of categories were thanked for their achievements at the West Bromwich Community Recognition Awards.

The event, organised by Sandwell Council's towns and neighbourhoods team and local councillors, was held at West Bromwich Town Hall.

Despite the weather, over 200 invited guests attended the evening of celebration and entertainment with family and friends, 'MC' Doug Parker and special guest Blind Dave Heeley.

Councillor David Hosell, town lead member, said: "This was a wonderful evening and the perfect opportunity to celebrate the town and shout about what makes West Bromwich great.

"We acknowledged how far we have come in recent years, and the hard work of many organisations and people towards our progress.

"We received some fantastic nominations - and our 50 finalists are all hard-working people or organisations that have gone above and beyond in their contribution to the town.

"We are very grateful to Queen's Square Shopping Centre, Tesco, West Bromwich Building Society, McDonald's, West Bromwich Albion FC and Dunton Environmental for taking part in and sponsoring the recognition event.

"I would also like to thank everyone who braved the weather to be part of an unforgettable and inspirational evening, as well as all those who helped organise and host the event and performed music on the night."

The raffle, sponsored by West Bromwich Albion with two corporate tickets to a match and signed football, raised £113 for the Mayor of Sandwell's charities, Help for Heroes and Different Strokes.

"Carol took the role of secretary from the start and has worked tirelessly ever since, raising the profile of the group and promoting the park at every opportunity, her name becoming synonymous with Dartmouth Park."

"Rita and Ann are uniting people and keeping the community spirit alive and kicking - young, oldies or in-betweens. They have worked tirelessly for our community for over 17 years."

"Barry has been nominated for making Bustleholme community open space a better place. He has led a small group of volunteers to help establish what is now known as Haywoods Nature Trail. Barry works all year round to maintain the nature trail, making it a welcoming, safe and attractive place for local residents and visitors."

"Terry has been researching and writing about West Bromwich for many years, and donates the profits from sale of his books to charities. His books bring the history of West Bromwich to the community and encourage local pride in the area in which they live."

"Margaret liaises between tenants and the council to ensure properties are kept to a decent standard. She chairs the Charlemont Farm TRA, no mean task. For many years, she has and still devotes her time to the welfare of local tenants."

"Saffron is a shining example of a positive peer and an asset in her community. She was one of five who founded the Cre-8 group in 2006 and gives up hours of her time to work with young people, encouraging them to dance, keep healthy and promote pride in themselves."

"Raaj FM is a community led radio station run by volunteers. They help support the council and police with local projects and keep the Sandwell community in touch with what's going on."

"West Bromwich Albion and England under 17s player has been called up to the WBA 1st team squad for the game with Stoke. Callam is an ambassador for SalterSports at Gorge Salter Academy who helps project manage the programme and has secured sponsorship from Coca Cola."
