Southampton 0 West Bromwich Albion 3: match report - Telegraph.co.uk

Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute by 27 year-old Madley - taking charge of his first Premier League game - before the man in black then sent off Danny Fox for a two-footed tackle on Steven Reid.

Fortune, scorer of the visitor's first, lashed out at Gaston Ramirez as a melee developed, with the Uruguayan given his marching orders for an elbow to Shane Long that sparked the trouble.

Romelu Lukaku had doubled West Brom's lead just three minutes earlier in a game that they didn't have to work too hard to win.

The Belgian international's 14th of the season was a fitting way to chalk up West Brom's record points haul in the Premier League and end Southampton's unbeaten run of six before Shane Long rubbed salt into their wounds with a third.

St Mary's was like home from home for the 3,000 vociferous West Brom fans who had been bussed to the south coast by 40 coaches laid on for free by the club.

While their supporters created the atmosphere on the terraces, West Brom's players created the magic on the pitch.

Steve Clarke's side needed just six minutes before taking the lead when Fortune bundled the ball over the line from a Graham Dorrans corner.

On-loan Chelsea striker Lukaku, could have had a hat-trick within the first 45 minutes on another day as he showed his class.

Centre-back Jonas Olsson tried to tee him up for a simple tap-in when he cushioned a well-worked Dorran's free-kick across goal for the 19 year-old.

Right-back Fox latched onto a loose ball in the box, but Foster showed lightening-quick reflexes to divert the ball over his bar.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino brought on Ramirez at half-time for Jack Cock and his change had the desired effect before things turned sour.

On the break Lukaku showed great power and pace to pull away from the Southampton back line before rounding Boruc and slotting home in the 67th minute.

Soon after Ramirez and Fortune were red-carded after the Southampton man needlessly lashed out at Long and Fortune took exception.

Long made sure of all three points to move Steve Clarke's side to 48 points when he drilled low and hard into the back of the net for his first in nine from 12-yards.
