The national championship of Spain, the Open de España is one of the oldest championships in golf. Founded in 1912, its list of winners includes such luminaries as Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Roberto de Vicenzo, and Padraig Harrington. Two Americans have won: Arnold Palmer (1975) and Jerry Heard (1974).
The 2013 edition is played at the Parador de El Saler, which last hosted in 2001. The course is relatively short, relying on Mediterranean winds to provide a defense of its holes.
