Louisville girls join males with shot at NCAA title

NEW ORLEANS (AP) a' Louisville's hockey teams have now been pulling for every other all through both NCAA competitions, perspiring through the nail biters, rooting the wins. There's not been a loss yet. It sure is a memorable time for you to be considered a Cardinal. The girls got a talk from men's mentor Rick Pitino after they lost to Notre Dame in the Big East tournament a' and they've not lost because, beating Cal 64-57 on Sunday evening to advance to the school's 2nd NCAA championship game. The women's participants gathered at a Brand New Orleans restaurant to view the men defeat Wichita State on Saturday and will soon be seeing again Monday evening when the men perform Michigan for the concept. "The way I look at it, I think the men are trying to feed off of our success," women's coach Jeff Walz said with a smirk before putting on a serious note that he'd received word from Atlanta that the Louisville men "were in the hotel lobby, jumping up and down and cheering for us." Pitino texted Walz after their success "congratulating us and telling me to inform the people what an unbelievable task they did." And so they really have. Connecticut women's instructor Geno Auriemma is well conscious of what Louisville goes through at this time. In 2004, the men's and women's teams at UConn were playing for the national concept and both came away victorious, the only time one school won both titles in the same year. Now Louisville can do it again. "If it were easy, it would have been done lots of situations, but the fact once teaches you how difficult it is to do," it's only been done said Auriemma after his team directed Notre Dame 83-65 to attain the last. "At once, it has been a magical year for Louisville. ... It's just amazing what they have had the opportunity to do, so I think we're playing against Louisville and we're playing against a particular karma, maybe." Auriemma's Huskies were eventually able to shake off the Fighting Irish, as a result of an amazing work by star freshman Breanna Stewart. She won a 29 points to opt for four blocks and was seemingly everywhere. "Given the period, and what was at stake, I don't know that I've seen any bigger performance," said Auriemma. "I know there is been NCAA tournament games that people experienced certain people play great, but I actually do not remember a player having a better game in this environment." UConn is likely to be going for its eighth title Tuesday night, which may fit Tennessee for probably the most in the women's college game. No team has dominated the Huskies under Auriemma the way the Irish had in the last few seasons. UConn (34-4) had lost the prior two national semifinals to Notre Dame and dropped this season to three exciting games with their meeting competitor. Her teammates and Stewart would not allow it happen again, stopping the amazing career of Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins with a thud. Diggins concluded with 10 points, going a dismal 3 for 15 from the field. "Once you arrive here you're only likely to beat good clubs. And the reason why Notre Dame has defeated us seven of the final seven times is because they're really, really good," Auriemma said. "For one night, that is what's great concerning the NCAA tournament, for one night, for just this night, we just must be much better than them, and we were." The Huskies developed a halftime lead and Notre Dame (35-2) could only get within six in the next half as its school-record winning streak found a finish at 30 activities. UConn and Notre Dame have created the best rivalry in women's hockey within the last several seasons, and this game may have been the ultimate chapter between your two with the Irish going to the Atlantic Coast Conference next time. Couple of years ago, the Huskies won the initial three meetings before Notre Dame stunned them in the national semifinals. The Irish had won eight of the last eight conferences before Sunday evening and this 1, for once, started slowly. Minutes were gone nearly 7A by notre Dame without a field goal, lost 14 sequential images, and neither team led by more than four on the first 16 minutes. But trailing 26-25 with 3:44 left in the half, UConn started to dominate. Bria Hartley, who has struggled all season while dealing with an ankle injury she suffered within the summer, was the spark. The junior guard started the spurt with a 3-pointer and added a nice pull-up minutes later to create it 32-26. Diggins was 0 for 6 from the subject in the first half as She was harassed by the Huskies all over the court. She won the Irish's first two points on free kicks and didn't have yet another level until finding a steal early in the second half and transforming it for the easy layup to create it 42-35. The two-time All-American tried to complete anything she could to move her team, twice chasing down Hartley on the break for a stop, but her shots weren't falling and her team was falling behind. UConn led 50-43 with 12:22 left before Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Stewart hit back-to-back 3s to provide their greatest lead to the Huskies. Notre Dame wasn't done, with star newcomer Jewell Loyd scoring five points throughout a 9-2 work to obtain the Irish within 61-55. While they could easily get but which was as close. Stewart was the most heralded freshman getting into the season, but fought through the middle area of the year. But ever since the Big East tournament she's been on a roll. "Every player, particularly young participants, handle issues differently," Auriemma said. "And I think if the period ended, it just allow air from the balloon and she explained, 'Now I just want to play basketball.' My God, she was incredible tonight." Now Stewart and the rest of the Huskies will get ready for the Cardinals, who have defeated Baylor, Tennessee and Cal their last three games to ensure it is to the champion. But that can wait until after Monday evening a' if the Cardinals can watch the men's group try to get their particular title. Com Follow Doug on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/dougfeinberg
